Which Loire Valley Historic French Castles Must You Visit On a Family Holiday

By: admin
Published: June 26th, 2010

The Loire Valley is a truly spectacular destination for a family vacation. There are many historical chateaux to visit, so many that it can be difficult to decide on which ones to visit before it becomes too much for the children to bare. Each of the Loire Valley chateaux listed below have their own special attraction.

We would highly recommend Chateau Close Luc and its beautiful park and working models of over forty of Leonardo Da Vinci’s amazing creations. Chateau Chaumont is worth a visit in the high season for the garden festival alone. Many of the gardens are incredibly interactive and highly sensory designed to capture the imaginations of children and adults.

Chateau Chenonceau is architecturally breathtaking and a must see. There is a maize for children to get lost in for a little while. Chateau Cheverney has spectacular furniture and a working pack of hounds. Chateau Chambord is the largest of the Loire Valley castles and you can hire bicycles or pedal boats to make it more child appealing.

Chateau Blois is interesting architecturally because it is like four chateaux rolled into one. It has the added benefit of being located opposite the Maison de la Magie which is a magic museum in honour of Robert Houdin who was Houdini’s inspiration. Children delight at the exhibits and simulations and the magic show is very impressive.

Chateau Chaumont (minimum visit 1 hour and another 2 hours for the garden festival)
Hours- 9:30-5:30, plan on 1 hour for your visit Cost- $6.00 includes an English pamphlet
Located between Amboise and Blois, this chateau is set high above the Loire River and commands lovely views. Its placement was for strategic reasons, since it was built as a fortress stronghold in 1465.

Later it became a home for royalty and then the merely rich. The most famous resident was Diane de Poitiers, the former mistress of King Henri II who lived in exile here, after Catherine de Medici demanded Chateau Chenonceau when King Henri II died.

Today the interiors represent the lavishness of the rich people living here until the 1930’s when the stock market crash caused the last owner to sell the property to the government. Of particular interest are the elaborate horse stables.

Chateau Blois (minimum visit 2-3 hours)
Hours- 9:00-6:00 Cost- $6.00 includes an English pamphlet. You can book a free guided tour even available in English. This castle dominates the town of Blois and was the home of royalty for over 400 years, including Charles the VIII and Francois I. Parts of the building, composed of four wings each of a different architectural style joined by a large central courtyard, date back to the 10th century.

Interiors include luxurious period design and floors stamped with fleur-de-lis motifs. One of the highlights is a Renaissance exterior spiral staircase designed by Leonardo da Vinci. In summer they have a sound and light show at night and on Wednesdays it is in English.

Chateau Azay-le-Rideau (minimum visit 1.5 hours)
Hours- 9:30-6:00 Cost- $6.00 for entrance and $4.00 for an audio guide
This chateau is less grand in size than many of the others listed here, but is all the more beautiful for it. Built in 1515, this is a fine example of early Renaissance. In summer there are often evening son et lumiere spectacles at the castle. It is best to visit this chateau late in the afternoon in summer so you can enjoy the sound and light show in the evening.

Chateau Usse (minimum 1.5 hours)
Hours- 9:00-6:30 Cost- $8.00 includes English pamphlet. This fairytale chateau with lots of turrets was the inspiration for the chateau in Sleeping Beauty. Construction began in 1455 on the foundation of an 11th century chateau, and subsequent remodels took place in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The chateau has been owned by the Blacas family since the 18th century and the family still occupies one of the wings. The grounds include several centuries old trees and a cedar that was given to the family in 1808.

There is a chapel from 1528 with a white sparkling interior made from local stones, and a garage with antique vehicles and a wicker carriage. The castle interior is filled with 18th century antiques. Finally you can climb the round tower to see wax figures depicting characters in Sleeping Beauty. If you are travelling with young children they will probably love the fairy tale scenes in the round tower depicted by wax models.

Chateau Cheverny (minimum visit 1.5 hours)
Hours- 9:15-6:45 Cost- $6.00, includes English pamphlet. This chateau was built in 1634 and has been owned and occupied by the same family ever since. Today family members occupy the 3rd floor. This castle has the best furniture of the Loire Valley Chateaux open to the public because the family that owned Cheverny was very popular with the local villagers and as a result the castle was not stripped of it’s treasures during the French Revolution.

The current interior is the most complete and lavish in the Loire Valley. This castle was built as a hunting palace and today hunts still take place on the grounds. You can visit the 70 hounds in their kennel, or watch the daily feed at 5:00 PM. The trophy room proudly displays the antlers from more than two thousand animals.

Chateau Amboise (minimum visit 1.5 hours)
Hours- 9:00-6:30 Cost- $7.00 includes an English pamphlet. The chateau towers over the town and offers a mix of architectural styles including 17th century classical and 16th century gothic. Six Kings of France lived here including Francois the 1st, who had an underground tunnel built to the home of Leonardo da Vinci, located nearby. Using this passage they could visit each other without mingling with the locals. In the 15th century this castle was four times its current size, but it has been reduced by war and neglect.

It is worth combining a trip to Chateau Amboise with a visit to Chateau Clos Luce as they are nearby.

Chateau Chenonceau (minimum visit 2.5 hours)
Hours- 9:00-7:00 Cost- $8.00 includes an English pamphlet. This castle is one of the most striking of the Loire Valley chateaux. It was built for Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of King Henri II. In 1559 when the King died his wife, Catherine de Medici, forced Diane into exile (to the smaller chateau of Chaumont).

After Catherine moved in she had the beautiful gallery added, which is 180 feet long, 18 feet wide, with 18 windows and set on arches over the Cher River. It was originally used as a ballroom, and in WWI it became a hospital and the wounded soldiers used to fish out the windows. During world war II it was a means of escape as the castle sat in occupied territory but the door at the end of the gallery opened to the Free Zone.

The kitchen is very popular with children. Today the gallery holds art exhibits. Also worth a note are the Marques Tower, the two formal gardens (each named for the two ladies who ruled the house), the 16th century working farm and the flower shop.

Chateau Chambord (minimum visit 2.5 hours)
Hours- 9:00-5:45 Cost- $7.00 for entrance and $4.00 for an audio guide
Chambord was commissioned by the young (then 25) King Francois in 1519 to help feed his power and establish his power. The building we see today was not completed until 1685, and by far it is the largest chateau in the Loire. The style is a combination of traditional French and Renaissance Italian with a variety of towers and turrets.

The facade alone is 470 feet wide and over 168 feet high (18 stories), with 365 chimneys and 440 rooms. The highlight inside the chateau is the double helix staircase which serves as the axis for the entire building, and is thought to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci.

Originally built as a meeting place for hunting and later used for royal celebrations, today it is surrounded by a nineteen mile wall that encloses the largest forest park in Europe. During its 500 year history, it was only used as a residence for 20 of those years.

If you have time to spare, you can rent boats or bikes to explore the park. There is a 2 hour evening light and sound show at dusk on weekends from mid-April to June and September, and nightly in July and August.

Hello From Orlando – Part 9: Exploring Scenic Mount Dora On The Herbie Express

By: admin
Published: June 22nd, 2010

In my quest to find unusual destinations to visit in the Orlando area, I stumbled over a little town by the name of Mount Dora just about 45 minutes north of Orlando. I had read that it was a very picturesque small town located on a lake, and one of its main attractions was a scenic railway.

Mount Dora is only 27 miles or 43 km northwest of Orlando. It has an elevation of 184 feet above Lake Dora, which makes it Florida’s only “mountain top town”. Indeed the rolling hillsides and winding roads are a welcome unique feature in the generally flat topography of Florida.

Mount Dora’s history dates back to the 1800s. In 1846 Lake Dora was named for Dora Ann Drawdy. She and her husband homesteaded two miles south of Mount Dora. In 1880 the town’s first name was Royellou, named after the three children of Postmaster R. C. Tremain – Roy, Ella, and Louis.

Then in 1883 the town was renamed Mount Dora. Incorporated as a town in 1910 with 370 residents, the town now has a population of around 10,000 people. The first railroad service through Mount Dora began in 1887 and by 1915 there were two passenger trains daily in each direction. At one time citrus was the major industry in the area, with a great deal shipped from Mount Dora, while today Mount Dora’s major industry is tourism.

According to the Local Chamber of Commerce, the town also has a number of claims to fame, including:
- The Friendliest Small Town
- Best Antique Shopping
- The New England of the South
- The City of Parks
- Festival City
- Top 100 Great Towns of America
- Best Romantic Escape
- Money Magazine “Top Places to Live Today”

What drew me here personally was the ride on the the “Herbie Express”, which is part of the Inland Lakes Railway, located in Mount Dora and Eustis, Florida. The ride I went on is a one hour train ride between Mount Dora and Wooton Park in Tavares. We departed in a Pullman sleeper railcar originally built in 1949 that was later refunctioned as a commuter railcar.

The route initially takes you along Lake Dora and later continues inland past shopping malls, and suburban residences. A young conductor explained the local sights to us and kept us entertained. The Lake Eustis / Mount Dora Railway also features other train rides, such as the Lake County Champion, the Blue Swan Dinner Train, and the Magnolia Sun Lunch Train. The Lake County Champion round trip is 2 hours and 20 minutes, with an opportunity for a short visit in Eustis to enjoy Ferran Park and area shops.

The oldest structure in Mount Dora is the Lakeside Inn, established in 1883. It features a wrap-around porch, gingerbread trim and a steep roof crowned with a corner spire. The grounds are beautifully landscaped.

Many of the walking and trolley tours through this quaint town start at the former 1915 Atlantic Coast Line Depot, home of the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce since 1973. Mount Dora’s most renowned architectural jewel is the Donnelly House. This Queen Anne-style structure uses design elements characteristic of the Victorian Era.

The Donnelly House was constructed in 1893 by John Phillip Donnelly, the first mayor of Mount Dora. The home sits on Donnelly Street within walking distance from downtown Mount Dora. The Donnelly House is just one of the many restored 19th and early 20th century buildings in the Golden Triangle area.

This charming little town also features a whole host of specialty retailers and is one of Florida’s largest antiques and collectibles centers. Renninger’s Twin Markets is renowned for its antiques shopping. The town also features a large variety of gift shops, fashion boutiques, decorative art galleries, interesting cafes and restaurants as well as charming bed and breakfasts.

One of my favourite features of this town, which also refers to itself as “City of Parks”, are the many public green spaces by the water. Donnelly Park, located right downtown and dating back to 1924, offers free concerts and other civic events. The park also features a tennis court and shuffleboard facilities.

After my demanding stroll through Mount Dora’s winding streets I walked down to the waterfront to Evans Park, which is located across from the lighthouse. The view from the waterfront bench was magnificent and I relaxed on the bench as I soaked up the sunshine. The park is adjacent to the Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club, one of the largest in the United States. Its 300 member association plays host to local and regional tournaments.

Simpson Cove and Grantham Point are adjacent to Palm Island Park and feature the only inland freshwater lighthouse in Florida. This lighthouse was built of bricks and donated by local residents. Gilbert Park features a public boat ramp, picnic area, croquet court and children’s playground along Alexander Creek.

Palm Island Park features a 1700 foot fresh water hiking trail and boardwalk through oak trees draped with Spanish moss. Other wildlife, including bald eagles, and local indidgenous plants can be admired here as well.

The City hosts many major annual events such as the popular “Mount Dora Arts Festival”. This event attracts over 150,000 people each year and has been ranked among the top art shows in the country. Other events include the Antique Boat Show, Antique Car Show, Golf Tournament, Bicycle Festival, Crafts Fair and Plant and Garden Fair.

While I was exploring this charming little town, my husband played golf at the Mount Dora Golf Association. He played a beautifully manicured full-size 18-hole course, and at $18 including cart, this outing was a real bargain. The Mount Dora area also offers a variety of other golf courses, including the Black Bear Golf Club, the Country Club of Mount Dora, Deer Island Golf Club, Eagle Dunes Golf Course, Heathrow Country Estates Redtail Golf Course, the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort and the Pine Meadows Country Club.

I capped off my explorations with a delicious late afternoon ice cream on the patio of the Sunshine Mountain Bakery, soaking up the sun while waiting to hear about my husband’s golf adventures. Mount Dora is a great day trip from Orlando and we enjoyed our drive back through the countryside of rural Florida.

For more information about Mount Dora you can visit the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce’s website.

Choosing a Philippines-PI Private Detective

By: admin
Published: June 8th, 2010

Finding a Professional, Avoiding the Amateurs

With demand for Philippines background checks, surveillance and private investigation on the rise in the Philippines, there has been a major increase in the number of providers. Many of these so-called investigators are locals trying to take cash in on the demand, and many clients end up having their money stolen, or receiving unacceptable and reliable work for their money.

The Local Joe vs. the Professional

Selecting a professional private investigator with the proper tools, experience and management team can be a challenge. Fraud and corruption reaches all corners of the Philippines, including many of the operating private investigators. In many cases the local investigator provides unacceptable service, or even no service at all. Other local investigators honestly attempt to do the work, but are not qualified or properly trained.

Sorting through the Mess: A Checklist

1. If it’s too cheap, there’s probably a reason.
If an investigator claims to offer an exceptional service, at a very low price, it’s a safe bet you will get what you pay for. Real, professional investigation can be expensive.

2. Beware of investigators that only accept Western Union.
A real company or professional investigator should have a website where you can submit various forms of payment, including a secure site where you can pay by credit card.

3. Avoid investigators who only accept PayPal.
PayPal is a secure payment option. However, be very skeptical if this is the only way to pay your investigator via a credit card. A real company will offer various forms of payment options, and allow you to submit your credit or debit card data directly via their secure website. A website that only offers PayPal for credit card payments is almost always a clear indication that you are dealing with an individual and not a real company.

4. Is the investigator available for a phone call?
Make sure your investigator is available over the phone. This will show you what kind of service you can expect throughout your case. Avoid any investigator who does not provide an office phone number on his email or website.

5. Use secure websites with privacy seals.
Private investigation can involve details of a very private nature. Look for a PI with a website with privacy seals such as Truste and/or McAfee security. These seals show that the company is serious about protecting your privacy.

6. Do surveillance photos have time-date stamps?
Surveillance photos during any professional investigation will have time-date stamps. This is industry standard and this type of evidence should be included in daily reports to clients.

7. Avoid websites with no business address or phone.
One of the best ways to distinguish the real investigation firm from the local or shady operation is to check the website’s contact us page. A real company has a secure contact us page on their website (with a lock on your browser) with a business address. A real investigator will be happy to provide clients with a business phone where he or she can be reached. If any investigator fails to provide this information, look elsewhere.

8. Avoid investigators with no references.
Before paying for an investigator, search the web for references of the company. This way you can learn what others are saying about the investigator. If there isn’t any feedback on the web, ask the investigator for a former client reference.

9. Avoid investigators who don’t speak proper English.
English is commonly spoken in the Philippines. It is also necessary to conduct a proper investigation there. A PI who doesn’t speak English fluently is unqualified.

10. Avoid websites that look unprofessional.
Inadequate budgets and training for development of the business, which can be perceived when viewing the company website, will likely be reflected in other areas as well, such as reports, surveillance and communication. Pay for quality.

11. Expect to pay a fair price.
Private investigation can be expensive. Instead of trying to save a few bucks by choosing a local or someone unknown, speak with a reputable firm about the best option for you. Choosing a cheap PI may mean money and time lost, so choose carefully.

12. Go with a foreign-based company.
Because of the fraud throughout the Philippines, we recommend using a company that is U.S or European managed or owned. This will ensure the company is ran according to stricter standards, and is accountable for safer business practices.

Keep the above checklist in mind when shopping for a Philippines private investigator  or elsewhere. Philippine PI™, a U.S. based firm with operations throughout the Philippines, contributed to the information in this article.

All the Best,

The Newspaper Clipping Service

By: admin
Published: June 5th, 2010

This is a very lucrative business, and it’s growing in demand and popularity. There are thousands of people in all parts of the world who are making hundreds of dollars each week, just reading and clipping news items in the privacy of their own homes!

The press-clipping business is very much misunderstood by most people, and therefore there are a lot of people who are very sceptical about it as a way for ordinary people to make extra money at home. If you explain to friends or neighbours that you operate a press clipping business, most of them will think you pore through the obituaries, funeral notices, and wedding announcements. Clipping these out and sending them to the people or relatives of the people being written about.

In reality, this is but a very small part of the home-based newspaper clipping service. The really successful press clipping services have contracts with companies and organizations that want to keep current on any number of matters reported in the papers.

Some companies hire clipping services in order to keep track of what their competitors are doing. Other companies, including businesses of all kinds, use clipping services as a means of locating sales leads and new customers. National magazines and newspapers are always in need of different or interesting material, and frequently employ home-based clipping services.

To set yourself up in this kind of business, you’ll need only a pair of scissors and as many different newspapers and magazines as you can subscribe to. A visit to your local library should be most informative relative to newspapers and magazines available to subscribers.

You should also visit your local wholesale paper house, or make a deal with your local stationery store to buy labels at a discount price. You’ll want to attach these labels to the top of each clipping you send to your clients. On these labels, you’ll want to print the name of the publication the clipping came from, and the date it appeared, as well as your own name and address.

The next step is simply to start clipping articles that mention or talk about specific companies or people. File your clippings in envelopes or boxes according to industries or types of businesses, by company name, and according to the names of the people mentioned.

Once you have ten or more clippings that talk about a particular company or person, put them in an envelope and send them to that company’s owner or public relations director. You should include a short note with the clippings, explaining your service and your fee.

You should try to get your clients to agree to pay you a monthly “reader’s fee,” for which you agree to look for anything in the newspaper about him or his company or industry. Every time you spot such an article, you of course clip it and send it to him. A minimum monthly “reader’s fee” is usually about $25, but it can vary according to the number of publications you read, and the number of clipping found.

Generally, a clipping service that scans state-wide publications will charge about $50 per client, or $100 per client for those wanting clippings from national publications. These fees, of course, are monthly fees, and you can easily see how you could make some very good money with just 20 to 25 clients.

To promote and build your business, you can scan your local business services directory and send out a solicitation letter to each of those listed. A couple of days after you’ve posted your sales letter; you should follow up with a phone call.

A short, to-the-point ad under “Business Personals” in your daily newspaper will also bring in new clients for you. And as soon as you can afford it, go with at least a small display ad in the yellow pages of your telephone directory.

You should definitely contact the public relations firms, advertising agencies, and civic organizations in your area. Explain your services and ask them if they have any special clients or needs you can help them with. You’ll find many of your local political and “cause” groups very interested in receiving clippings about their opponents.

Clipping services in one form or another have been around since the advent of the printing press, and as stated earlier, they’re becoming more in demand. It’s definitely the kind of business anyone who knows how to read can set up and operate with an absolute minimum investment.

Hoodia Diet Pills in Conjunction with the Typical American Diet

By: admin
Published: June 3rd, 2010

As Americans, we have drastically changed our diet and eating habits over the last century, in hopes to help us shed excess body fat. We’ve tried cutting back on foods from the “grains” food group, as well as tried cutting back on fresh fruits and dairy products. But until we learn how to balance our diets, and eat healthy, we many never succeed. The following paragraphs will discuss the typical American diet, as well as how changing our eating habits and adding Hoodia diet pills can increase our chances of weight loss success.

First, let us take a brief look at the meat we consume. Since the mid-1990’s, chicken passed pork in the running for America’s most popular meat, leaving it right on the heels of beef. While this is good news for those wanting to lose their extra weight, beef is still the leader in this race. Beef is higher in saturated fat, as well as trans fat. We often find it more convenient to stop by our local fast food restaurant on our way home from work to grab dinner. In order to achieve successful, healthy weight loss, this habit must be broken. One way to do this is by adding Hoodia diet pills to your daily diet.

Hoodia diet pills contain a natural molecule that can fool our brains into thinking we’re full, even when we haven’t eaten. By adding Hoodia diet pills to our daily regimen, it will make it easier to avoid fast food restaurants, as well as help us to replace the red meat in our diets with poultry and fish. In doing so, we will be decreasing our daily calorie intake, as well as decreasing the amount of fats we consume. This will result in successful, healthy weight loss.

Next, let’s consider the grains, such as cereal and flour. Since the late 1990’s, as Americans, we are consuming less and less of most of this food group in attempt to achieve healthy weight loss. In conjunction with Hoodia diet pills, wondrous results can be achieved. With the help of Hoodia pills, it will seem like nothing to decrease the amount of grains you consume daily. You should be able to reduce your grain intake without even giving it much of a second thought with the help of 100% pure Hoodia.

Finally, over the limit consumption of soda and other sugary drinks greatly contribute to the lack of healthy weight loss in America. Although bottled water consumption is on a steady rise, we still tend to drink too much soda and sugar. By adding Hoodia diet pills to our daily diets, we will not only be enabling ourselves to eat less, but we will also be enabling ourselves a better chance of giving up these sugary drinks.
